Modern living ain’t all that different

I don’t like separate CSS files that come packaged with plugins. It’s a pain the bum when you need to customise it and the developer releases an update.

Informal, qualitative survey on unimportant matters

Sometimes I think I’m the non-cheese-moving type. Other times I think I’m all about moving the cheese.

Frivolously, this dairy product metaphor has appeared in my drive to re-design.

Do you guys prefer the standard weblog layout, with full-length posts appearing in the main content column of this site and other stuff in the sidebar, or would you be happy for a little experimentation (i.e. a non-PHP-coder hacking away at the WordPress Loop) on my part?

I have an idea, you see. It’s not exactly fully-formed, but it’s gestating away in the back of my mind (better than other things gestating, even though my friend Ken has reminded me that our biological clocks are ticking away). Many sheets of A4 printed on a single side (before I discovered duplex booklet printing on the photocopier) are being recycled with my scribbles.

You know, I think I might do both and keep everyone happy (except for those who won’t be).

Hehe. Tell me what you think, anyway, and post links of clever (not necessarily beautiful) WordPress designs to inspire me*.

WordPress vs. Movable Type

Sigh. Catfights. Geeky catfights, at that.

I’ve pared my WP install down to very few plugins (and none of them show up on the plugin compatibility page), so perhaps my experience will be different when it gets upgraded to 2.5. I’ve never had problems upgrading since I started using WP, but never say never, I guess.

I’ll see what happens, but I’m not going to bother to switch — my sites need a bit of a re-design, anyway. If I ever find the time…

Holiday: a summary

Movies watched while in-flight
1408 (should not have watched it ‘alone’), The Jane Austen Book Club (meh, okay but not as good as I’d hoped), Superbad (tragically possible), Atonement (waaaaay better than the book, and this is the first time I have ever said anything like that)

Movies watched in the cinema
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Johnny Depp can sing?!), Away From Her (so, so sad), Juno (excellent, highly recommended)

Food consumed
wonton noodles, kway chap, chicken rice, prata, raw fish (the traditional one, not the nasty Chinese New Year fakery dish), carrot cake, prime rib at Black Angus, seafood with crispy noodles, dim sum, Indonesian food, steamed fish, popiah, Sri Lankan crab, chwee kueh, bak kwa, ba kueh (bai guo in Chinese)

Books I tried to read but had to give up
Atonement (if the plot had plodded any slower it would be going backwards, I’m not getting this love for Ian McEwan), Northanger Abbey (ran out of time)

Clothing bought (yes, I’m a bad girl)
Two pairs of black trousers (from Giordano, the old stalwart; did you know in Far East Plaza my thighs are too big for a size Large?!)

Shoes bought
None — this is an unprecedented event. Somewhere else in the universe, there has been an earthquake. Or something.

Number of bead shops visited
Four — three in People’s Park Centre and one in Holland Village (that’s closing down, boo)

Most unexpected moment
Being asked for ID when buying tickets for Juno, rated NC16 (there is no freaking way I look under 16)

Number of times I laughed with Penelope at the line dancers at Zouk (and said silly things)
Too many (and too many gin and tonics, too)

How long it took Topaz to come over and touch Neil with her paw and bat her kitty eyelashes after she smelled bak kwa and spotted a piece in his hand
About ten seconds

WordPress and premium themes

As usual, I’m completely out of it. Apparently, Automattic, the company (now) behind WordPress, are going to set up a ‘premium’ themes marketplace, and as with anything that affects a lot of people, there are those who are happy and those who aren’t.

In the latter link, there is a bit of a back-and-forth between the two sides, as one would might expect. I think it’s sad that a [use Eddie Izzard tone here] groovy concept such as WordPress can cause upset when the creator announces something new. Matt Mullenweg doesn’t appear to have developed the thick skin that’s needed when you’re a *cough* celebrity *cough* in the web world.

I don’t think it’s a big deal, and I’m all for paying the developers of WordPress after all their years of work, although I would probably like to know more about Automattic as a business before doing anything substantial. I make my own themes, so it won’t affect me (I don’t use WordPress.com anyway).

I wish everyone could chill out and let things happen. If I ever created a theme that I thought was good enough for others to download, I’d probably give it away. I don’t think that day will ever come. Heh.

Ye old, old archives, the handcoded ones

I’m very, very tempted to remove all my handcoded, static archives, and slowly, LABORIOUSLY, enter them into WordPress so my archives are all in one place (and I can fix any posts that are essentially dead or no longer suitable). The post numbers will be all fucked up, but I’m not about search engine-friendly URLs on this bloog anyway, so it doesn’t matter (or maybe I should do the nice permalinks thing just because I can).

Anyone at all think this is a good idea? With my rather panicked crafting of various swap items and birthday presents, WOX once a week (yes, it’s baaaccckkk, I’m going to start helping out as editor at large), and potential general not-very-manual labouring on the house project, deciding to move my static archives to WordPress seems dead foolhardy.

However.

Manually re-formatting the archives is a serious pain in the arse (if you look at what’s there at the moment, you’ll see they’re all over the fucking shop), and I am currently obsessed with reworking the site so as much of it is powered by WordPress as possible (fewer re-design headaches). I’m going to have to redo all the image URLs, though. That’ll be fun.

Does this categorisation work?

So we’ll see if this patch works.

Update: yay! Now, if I could only work out how to get the line breaks and strange gaps at the end of every post to disappear.
