Penguins and dinosaurs — spot the difference

Turns out that fast-moving dinosaurs had a similar breathing system to PENGUINS.

Penguins. Cute and cuddly on the outside, efficient, merciless KILLERS on the inside.

Put a cat and a penguin together…

cat and penguin, fish, and an approaching thunderstorm

Here’s something for discussion. Say there is a hungry cat and a hungry penguin, and they both spot some fish lying on the street (let’s pretend it’s normal for penguins and cats to live in the same area). But there is a fast-approaching thunderstorm, and while the cat’s claws are likely to make mincemeat of the penguin, it really, really hates water. So who ends up with the fish?

I didn’t make this thought experiment generator, I just came up with the idea for it. But I’m dead pleased with how it’s turned out. I did not specify that cats and penguins had to be in it, this is what we call a happy coincidence.

Giant. Penguins. Wahooooooooo!

Ancestors of our cute feathered, fish-eating friends were 1.5m tall. The artist’s impression makes it look like a cross between a seagull and penguin.

What sound does a penguin make

Nigel

Meet Nigel. Nigel is my first successful amigurumi thingamajig. I was initially going to make a rabbit following the instructions on Roxycraft, but I got taken with the idea of crocheting amigurumi paperweights — ornaments / softies with a practical use and all that. Nigel is stuffed with polyfill and has a bag of aquarium gravel wedged into his middle to give him a little more density.

Side views of Nigel

Nigel is far from perfect, as I’m only beginning at crochet. The hardest part for me was working in the round, as I’m not very good at paying attention and counting stitches. I used a safety pin to mark the last stitch in a round, and was very rude to Neil as I was always trying to keep track of where I was in the stitch sequence.

The stitches aren’t too uniform, but they’re close enough for my liking and I imagine I’ll get better with practice.
