Review — Apocalypto

As Neil likes to say, Mel Gibson directs good movies. Unlike Kevin Costner, he doesn’t try to make himself the hero of an epic tale of love / disaster / triumphing over insurmountable odds. Neil wanted to watch this in the cinema, and I agreed it would probably be a great big-screen outing, but time got away from us and we never got round to it. So when we saw it on sale at Asda, Neil snapped it up.

So, basically, Apocalypto is a movie about a Mayan villager, Jaguar Paw, who sees his village destroyed by ‘big city’ Mayans. They take him (and loads of others) prisoner. They march them — tied — to their city, to face a horrible fate. Jaguar Paw manages to survive and escape (more on this later), driven only by the desire to save his pregnant wife and child.

(This is all on the back of the DVD cover, so none of what I’ve said is a spoiler. But spoilers are below the fold.)

A run down on the holiday where I got loads done in only six days

Yes. It’s been pretty quiet round these parts, hasn’t it?

If I’ve been on holiday and haven’t bothered to update, it means I HAVE HAD A GREAT TIME.

Food

Prawn noodles from Adam Road Food Centre were ordered the night I arrived as the BBQ seafood stall wasn’t open. Mum had also bought loads of chwee kueh (steamed rice cakes with preserved turnip garnish) for breakfast, and myself and the cats enjoyed the ba kwa (barbecued pork slices) very much. My aunt was cool and cooked kiam chye ar (duck and salted vegetable soup) for the annual Reunion Dinner (also starring were fried Hokkien noodles, fish my aunt and uncle had caught off Bedok jetty the night before, rojak, and the inevitable raw fish salad).

I got another of my food requests at my grandfather’s house during Chinese New Year — steamed pomfret, Teochew-style. There was something I didn’t ‘order’ as I’d completely forgotten about it, but the ba kueh (stubby rice noodle cakes) was fan-fucking-tastic.

Then, of course, there’s the food I like and Neil loves and I ate and took pictures to piss him off. Barbecue stingray with sambal, plus baby kai lan with garlic at Newton. We even got some fried rice to go with it.

On my last day, we grabbed breakfast at Farrer Court hawker centre, Neil’s favourite place for roti prata. I got two plain pratas and the requisite vegetable curry.

I ate loads of other stuff, but these were the highlights.

Sights

On Chinese New Year’s Eve, I reverted to my childhood behaviour (i.e. going to my mother every five minutes with proclamations of extreme boredom) and persuaded my mum to take me to the River Hongbao, as nothing else was open. Chinese New Year is probably the only time you’ll see Chinese Singaporeans THROWING MONEY AT A TREE.

I also finally watched I Not Stupid (not bad) and I Not Stupid 2 (bad). Mum had wanted to watch Just Follow Law, Jack Neo’s satire on the Singaporean civil service. It wasn’t a satire at all, it kinda sucked. It was like a weak channel 8 sitcom that’s been stretched to feature-length. The acting wasn’t bad, but the story was shite.

We did also see Miss Potter (and I could hear my aunt whispering to my mum regarding its historical accuracy — we checked Wikipedia afterward), a light and pleasing flick. And my aunt was not at all keen on Notes on a Scandal (although she used my grandfather as an excuse — not his type of film at all, apparently). ‘Twas good.

I managed to run so many errands, because being a grown-up means you get up early, go out and do stuff in the morning, inhale lunch, take a NAP in the arvo, then head out for a feast at dinnertime. Bussorah Street was visited TWICE, and I got most of my pressies there. Brian has already used the slingshot I bought him and I hereby apologise to his neighbours for his behaviour on Saturday night / Sunday morning, although I wasn’t there.

Finally, here’s a picture of Doug and Ruthven.

Ruthven’s a present for Baby G. If Doug had fingers, you would see that he’s doing the bunny ears thing behind Ruthven’s head.

Can’t keep anything good

So.

I got a DVD from my sister (Heading South).

Mark and Kristen sent me a scarf to match the hat I got for Christmas, and the book The Devil in the White City. This was recommended to me a number of months ago by young Jeff in California. Dr HH Holmes, America’s first acknowledged serial killer is one of two main characters, and since I’ve read about his crimes in the past, I’m quite excited about this. I also got a card about dogs and blogs. Very funny.

Then, I managed to uncover a secret plan to make me a turkey dinner for my birthday (I asked what the turkey defrosting on the counter was for). And Neil has invited his sister and her new man (we call him Shabba) to the Ben Folds concert tomorrow night. I really hope he plays some of my favourites. Mainly Song For the Dumped and Rockin’ the Suburbs.

No surprises so far (good), and no, I can never be kept waiting when it comes to birthday pressies.

(While Neil, his sister, and pal are away I have time to post that) This weekend I…

  • saw my weekend start on Thursday as a few drinks at The Londoner turned into several drinks because Alan was there
  • slept in
  • wrote down some crochet patterns as I made them (the finished products will make an appearance in my Etsy shop soon, I hope — unless Apple has her way and consigns them all to her brick and mortar store)
  • had chilli roasted fish (and other things) for dinner (with Choi, then we met Apple at theirs)
  • finished my project for the cuff swap (to be sent out on Monday, I’m rather nervous about her reaction, it’s my first cuff, photos will be posted on Flickr after she receives it)
  • had dinner at our local Thai restaurant (something is wrong with me… I like the Tom Yam with coconut soup, two things I have always avoided)
  • finished watching all the episodes I have of Desperate Housewives, season two (I blame my mother for raving about it, she’s got me hooked on something that I think is actually quite silly )
  • watched The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (loved it)
  • went to to the fabric market to pick up some supplies
  • crafted at Apple’s shop (while the rain came pouring down)
  • got dragged to dinner at Little Chilli
  • worked on some freelance stuff

This weekend I…

  • had dinner at Havana (where we wouldn’t go but for the vouchers I get — it’s not that good, frankly)
  • went to The Londoner for a bit (and had a great time watching old videos — sadly, without sound — on MTV)
  • got stuff prepared for posting off on my first craft swap
  • had dim sum at Lucky Full with the Chong clan
  • went to Fenny’s place and watched The Naked Kiss
  • tried to go to the chiropractor (it was closed and moving to another location)
  • went for a massage at Chang Sheng Tang
  • had dinner at the Singapore restaurant
  • had lunch at a great Xinjiang place
  • went furniture window shopping with Choi and Apple (Choi and Apple were shopping, we were looking)
  • watched Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit (whee!!!!!)
  • watched a couple of episodes of Arrested Development, season one
  • had dinner at The House (which, by the way, was quite disappointing — my vegetarian gnocchi is about 2/3 the size it was when it was first put on the menu, and for the same price)
  • finished reading Stupid White Men

This weekend I…

  • had dinner at Little Chilli
  • went to The Londoner (to meet Reuben, and it became really crowded and smoky later on, when we got home out clothes absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke)
  • did a load of laundry
  • watched The Big Lebowski (finally)
  • did nothing all day (the weather was shite)
  • went to Georgie’s birthday dinner at Pattaya
  • ended up at The Londoner, which was very smoky (because the smokers couldn’t handle the cold and had all the windows closed, so I stayed outside most of the time)
  • watched the first half of Aeon Flux (I used to watch the cartoon infrequently on the telly, and Neil likes to see girls in tight outfits, so it was win-win)
  • continued reading The Historian
  • finished watching Aeon Flux (I had such low expectations at the beginning, and so it turned out better than I thought)
  • had dinner at Tutto Bene (had a hankering for stew, and it the only place that I could think of that served something like stew)
  • finished reading The Historian (what a good book; I love vampire stories, and this one was a great tale with the ‘back story’ of Dracula extremely well fleshed out)

This weekend I…

  • was invited to a dinner of (expensive) wine and food at the Sofitel (the food and wine was good, but geez, the price tag — luckly I was invited)
  • met up with Neil at The Londoner
  • got dragged to Park Latin
  • stayed till Clint (the DJ) dragged us to La Bomba (new club)
  • slept in most of the day
  • had dinner at the Japanese all you can eat
  • drank a pot of fruit tea at the Singapore restaurant
  • had a coffee at Javaromas
  • read a book while Neil watched Yellow Submarine
  • went for lunch at the floating restaurant
  • wandered around Fire Island, Huoshaoyu (火烧屿)
  • had dinner at The House
  • watched Human Traffic (wasn’t as good as wee Delboy hyped all those years ago, but a great effort for a first-time feature director)

This weekend I…

  • had dinner and a party at the floating restaurant (Wayne’s birthday)
  • finished off with drinks at The Londoner
  • slept in all day Saturday (those drinks finished Saturday off, too)
  • had a great dinner at Glass House (their grilled potato slices are amazing)
  • had a couple of Bloody Mary’s at The House (Joel made a great Caesar on Friday and I was needing tomato juice)
  • had a cheese omelette for brunch (Neil still makes a yummy omelette)
  • pootled around at home
  • had dinner at Tutto Bene (too! salty!)
  • watched Neil have cake and coffee while I gulped water down at Javaromas
  • watched Ed Wood (what a great film)
