Primer

Wow. Primer was a weird film.
From what I’ve been able to understand by thinking incessantly about it for a couple of hours and consulting Wikipedia, I think I’ve finally grasped how time travel works in the film (which helps explain the narrative).
Quite simply, the two main characters created multiple temporal loops by entering the Box on one side and never exiting on the other. The key to understanding it was explained as such:
12:00 –> 12:01
When the subject entered the Box at time B, time flip-flopped between A and B. As long as they exited at A, they were all right. If they exited at B, they would have got several years older (after spending one minute in the Box).
I think. I’m not sure, but it’s something like that. Either way, the Box only allows them to travel back in time.
So, they entered the box and this creates a new timeline. I think it happened at least five times in total for both characters. The one major thing I didn’t understand was how Abe and Aaron could travel even further back in time than when they first entered the Box.
I actually quite enjoyed Primer. It was really confusing, but after I spent the time thinking about it I ended up very impressed by Shane Carruth’s story. This movie is not a cheap escapist tale; the budget may have been low, but the ideas were incredibly complex and fascinating.
