I am not engaged
Nor am I married, and yet I’ve been asked to write about rings related to getting hitched. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against diamond engagement rings and so on, but I think people take them way too seriously.
I’ve had one diamond ring, a 21st birthday present from dear Mum. The stone became VERY loose in its housing within a couple of years, although it looked much more secure than the normal claw thing, and so it needed to be fixed. And then it got stolen the first week I moved to China. Go figure, eh?
Anyway, I now have a cool industrial diamond ring from Gordon Max and I think it’s fabulous. And it’s not an engagement ring, I bought it myself. I must admit that a nice diamond ring next to a simple wedding band does look very pretty, but I like other stones more. Garnets and sapphires are my thing, really.

Hi Andrea. You may find this article in the Atlantic Monthly about diamond rings… interesting.
Interesting indeed!!
That story does barely touches the affect of the Russian diamond mines today, and the possibility that lab manufactured diamonds could drop the value by a factor of 10 in another 40 years.
Mmmm, when Bust wrote it’s indie guide to getting married few issues ago, it mentioned that the stone never used to be diamond until DeBeers came up with this huge advertising campaign in the 20’s to make diamond THE stone.
And I’m spamming you, aren’t I?
