Smokers fined for flouting ban

Some interesting discussion on the six-month old ban on smoking in Scotland. I do imagine that businesses that used to allow smoking indoors have suffered, but it’s kind of spurious to claim that this ban will cause more street fights and smoking in front of children at home.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Smoking is a choice. Unfortunately, this choice has a negative effect on other people, and by now these cannot be claimed as unintended. If you choose to smoke in front of your children and they suffer later, you caused their ailments. Choosing when and where to smoke a cigarette is not something you cannot control. I bet even the most diehard smokers can opt to leave off for a few minutes if they have to.

Create smoking rooms like they have at Changi airport. That’s a solution for the winter, eh?

Elsewhere: Tobacco firms sued over low tar (my cigarette of choice all those years ago was Marlboro Menthol Lights — had I been fooled?!).

Troy

Ontario has had a province wide smoking ban in place for three months (no smoking in public places - that includes bars, restaurants, dance clubs etc etc.) and I doubt there has been a detrimental effect on any of these industries. Besides most of the regions in Ontario have had some form of smoking ban in place before the province wide one (Waterloo’s has been in place for I believe 5 years).
