Better to die at the hands of a stealthy cat

Upgrading to WordPress 2.0

Wow, the admin area sure is pretty now.

The upgrade seems to have gone just fine (here’s a link to help with upgrading, Kristen). I was happy with the non-WYSIWYG posting text area of earlier versions, so this flashier interface is going to take some getting used to. It also seems a bit slower than before.

However, everything appears to have gone smoothly, including plugin updates. Cheers to the WordPress development team who have done a bang-up job of making the upgrade so simple.

Update: I’ve just unchecked the ‘Use the visual rich editor’ on my profile so there’s no more WYSIWYG. That was easy.

Does this work with WordPress 2? I hope so.

Bloody fucking Jesus Christ in heaven this sucks

… my digital camera is dead. Because the battery charger is dead. I can’t even download the photos that are on it, because there is no juice, no juice to power the little Sony Cybershot baby.

Goddammit.

How am I going to survive before our vacation in Singapore where I will get everything — including that pesky problem of the camera turning itself on and off — fixed and happy so my life is once again complete?

This weekend I…

  • went to a very smoky Londoner (where the wussy smokers couldn’t bear leaving a window open for us non-smokers because it was bloody cold)
  • stood outside at the barbecue stall having a little supper
  • watched Wedding Crashers (better than I’d expected)
  • slept in
  • went to Andy’s bar for a quick dinner
  • watched Garfield, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story on satellite at The House
  • stayed in bed and crocheted
  • got out of bed and crocheted
  • had xiao long bao for dinner (mmm, soupy dumplings)
  • met up with TuTu at Javaromas to return his DVDs and get some books (I got so many books yay!)
  • watched Transporter 2 (hmm… complete suspension of disbelief, anyone?)

El Punto sobre la I

Gael García Bernal is a bit of a cutie, isn’t he?

We saw Dot the I a few days ago. I was expecting something rather poor, given the lousy trailer on satellite, and it was on after something really bad (Spartan), so I was pleasantly surprised how into it I got. The plot was pretty clever, the characters believable though not necessarily endearing.

Enjoyable movie. Watch it with mates.

Bliss and Dan engaged

I’m just reading that Dan popped the question on New Year’s Eve… a big chunk of congratulations and massive bear hugs to Dan and Bliss. (Kristen, don’t start. Heh.)

Just in case anyone cares, I got an iron for Christmas last year

Neil’s just such a treasure, isn’t he?

This year, I got Neil a bright green LeTigre shell suit top.

I’ve asked for a bathrobe. I haven’t got that yet.

S’pose I could’ve asked for something else. My list is probably long, if I take the time to think about it.

For popularity reasons? Surely not…

The Times:

The basic arithmetic of the US-China economic relationship remains a mutually beneficial one. The US has a vast current account deficit, which China helps to fill by buying US Treasury bonds. That has the dual benefit of keeping the US economy afloat on a sea of relatively low long-term interest rates, while protecting the value of the dollar, thereby ensuring China’s exports remain competitive (though controversial) in American markets.

China has an additional interest in propping up the dollar — with upwards of $250 billion in US official debt on its books, the Chinese central bank is not anxious to spark a dollar collapse.

So the move is, on both sides of the Pacific, another gentle, but welcome shift to a more normal economic relationship between the US and China. The US wants the yuan to fall a bit against the dollar, but nothing too dramatic.

But :

“They do need to clean up their act on intellectual property, they do need to understand that trade is a two-way street,” [John] Snow said. “We’re not satisfied one bit on the currency issue, but it’s awfully important we resist these protectionist pressures.”

Hm. If the cynicism and blatant vote-grabbing is so obvious to me, why isn’t it to the general American population?

We’re all gonna dieeee…

Turkey says dead boy had bird flu — and so it begins.

We’re doomed! We’re all gonna neglect the most basic personal hygiene practices and sneeze and cough on each other and not wash our hands after going to the toilet, hell, we won’t even use loo roll, and we’re all going to get sick and perish aaaaaauuuuggggghhhhhh!

SMS from outside the Porsche showroom

Someone just bought a Carrera
GT for 6.45 million RMB. Ouch.

Can you imagine if it called a chat line

A cat called 911 and saved his owner, who’d fallen out of his wheelchair. No drilling here.

If you were on that road trip to KL with Mark and Kristen a few years ago…

… you will want the cake or death felt flip toy. Excellent, very cool, and now I want to make a cat drilling / dog drooling one.

This New Year’s weekend I…

  • had an average (and how) buffet dinner at the Jinyan Hotel
  • went to The House for a mint tea with Kristie
  • had dinner with David at the Singapore restaurant
  • saw in the New Year at the new U&I Bar (country and western-tastic)
  • went to Park Latin
  • slept in
  • ate a bowl of beef claypot rice (I love the crunchy burnt bits on the bottom)
  • drank a large pot of fruit tea at Sun Dance (and crocheted)
  • watched Gettin’ Square (it would have been good if it wasn’t obviously apeing Guy Ritchie)
  • watched Altered States
  • watched three episodes of Auschwitz: The Nazis and the ‘Final Solution’ (we only have three episodes, and this annoys me)
