And in other news…

… I just got fired from my day job because I do What’s On Xiamen.

I guess getting that advertising revenue has just become that much more important.

holy shit. what was the reason they gave you? was it any particular post?

WTF? I thought you were doing a good job of tiptoeing the political line with Wha’sUp.

Well, What’s On is also a print magazine, and I’d told them about it first when I interviewed (it wasn’t a print magazine then), and when the new head of the department arrived earlier this year (it had become a print magazine). So it wasn’t exactly a secret, but now I guess they decided that if I don’t live and breathe my (now former) day job after office hours, seven days a week, I’m not a good employee.

Also, it wasn’t my manager who spoke to me, they let the CEO’s secretary inform the HR manager who called and said, So, today’s your last day. And when I asked why, she said I don’t know. So I had to go run around to find out the reason behind it. No word from the manager, and I doubt she’ll be talking to me either.

The other element of Chinese culture that really pisses me off is the fear of any sort of confrontation. It’s cowardice that I’ve encountered in other organisations in Xiamen before.

I… just wanted… SOME BREAKFAST!

Bad news for you…but I understand from conversation with others around town, your previous employer has a reputation for its’ HR practices.

I need might need a web-site designer, soon as I appear to be getting the bullet also (but not till the end of the year at this stage)!

That is ridiculous! If they treat you like that, it’s not worth working for them anyway!

It really sucks not knowing why, but between the office politics and regular politics, I do not think you will never know for sure.

TuTu, I know. When I first started I went out for dinner with someone, and he let fly with what he thought about the company’s HR practices. To which my reaction was, oh great.

Lisa, I had planned to not renew my contract when it expired at the end of July, so I’m not exactly broken up about it. It’s more the cowardice on the part of the decision-makers that annoys me. I guess I’ll just do those websites for people and work on What’s On and help Neil.

Terry, a Canadian girl was also summarily fired from the company a few months ago with no good reason. Rumour has it someone close to the boss had it in for her. But, once again, no one knows for sure.

It looks like you could make money if you are good at gaming.

Ouch, best of luck on finding something new. But in the short term, enjoy the extra time off.

myrick, them’s the breaks. At least I get three week’s pay (Lord knows what they’ll decide to deduct from it, though) in lieu of notice. Sad thing is, I don’t really have time off… I’m going to be helping Neil with the company we set up, doing websites, and What’s On. I’ll just be able to do them during the day now.

What?!

I’m sorry, Andrea. I hope something that is beyond fantastic shows up for you in the very near future.

That’s infuriating.

Yup. At least I didn’t get fired for my website!

shit man! what a load of rubbish. and so bizarre too, really. i mean, basically it’s like firing you because you like to do stuff in your spare time when you’re not at work. like, let’s say you spent all your non-work time practicing and playing competetive tennis, would they fire you for that? i’m pretty sure the answer is no. but a website - oooh - fire! fire!

now that is just pathetic. being an HR person, i’m quite appalled at how this was handled but if they had a reputation to begin with, it’s hard to teach that old dog a new trick.

grrrrr, I say.

Update: I got a full month’s pay in lieu of notice. It pays to be pleasant to the boss’ secretary. The other thing is that the department I was in is rumoured to be closing, and moving to Shanghai. They may see firing people on a pretext preferable to making people redundant.

:(
