Okay, now this is getting ridiculous. Following Acid Flask‘s shut down, another blooger has decided to stop posting public entries.
My sitemeter had registered many hits in the past couple of weeks from Singapore based domains; the edu.sg, gov.sg and net.sg ones kind of unnerved me.
Hmm. How can I say this clearly?
CALM THE FUCK DOWN.
Unless you’ve made it a point to talk defamatory shite and make accusations you’re not prepared to back up, Singaporean bloogers should be able to continue as per normal. That’s why it’s important to keep to this simple rule of blooging (or any sort of publishing on the web): do not write things you wouldn’t say in public.
Well, he probably had more reason than most to be afraid; he was almost in love with acidflask ;)

the threat, alone, is sufficient to deter, once the costs are weighed.

AcidFlask, I was referring to bloogers who choose to shut down when no threat has been made to them. You obviously received a specific… request to remove content from your site. The threat of legal action in Singapore is very real, no doubt about that. But bloogers panicking and then censoring themselves (presuming they aren’t writing defamatory shite) is a stupid step backwards.

You might be surprised as to what constitutes ‘defamatory shite’. For instance, Christopher Lingle was found to have committed defamation for writing in the IHT about an unnamed Asian regime that used a “compliant judiciary” to “bankrupt opposition.” No reference was made to Singapore in the entire article.
If you have a drift-net law and loads of things unpredictably are caught under it, it’s just a question of whether you incur ire or not – not whether you are writing something which you know beforehand would be ‘defamatory shite’.

I’m Singaporean. I know almost anything can be construed as defamatory shite.

Can somebody tell me once and for all 5 key steps to CHILL THE FUCK OUT! Why are we all more stressed than we have to be? What does it all matter in the end? As Kipling says it’ll all be “one with Nineveh” anyway?
