Skateboarding is not a crime

skatestopperA link from SixDifferentWays brought my attention to Skatestoppers, a company that makes ‘anti-skating’ devices (plenty more where they came from). Pieces of metal or plastic are affixed to pavements and other places to prevent skaters (inline and boarders) from grinding.

At least grinding is what we called it when I was skating.

I can understand why property owners wouldn’t want people to grind their trucks or whatnot all over the place, and skaters shouldn’t be destroying other people’s property, but this only looks like lawsuits waiting to happen. Especially since they’re American firms. Will they (or these aggrieved property owners) pony up when someone hits one of these things, flies onto the road and gets hit by a car? From what I’ve read, skaters can pry them out with screwdrivers, causing more damage to the property they’re supposed to protect.

Maybe there should be more skate parks or ‘skate-safe’ areas. Maybe people should stop trying to make the world perfect and pleasant according to their image, because that goal is clearly not the same for everyone.

In a nutshell: you’re always going to have people who disrespect other people’s property, no matter what you do. Unless, of course, you live in a castle, then you can sic archers and musketeers on them or something.

build a skate park. Well at least gum is legal now right?

If I had property being defaced by skaters, I would hire Puss In Boots to take care of them.

I’m torn when it comes to skaters. In theory, all skaters are respectful of other people and private property. In reality, this is not the case. For every one skater that’s nice, there are 50 more who trespass, vandalize, and disrespect authority openly. And as long as they refuse to respect others and private property, they have no right to demand respect and fair treatment.

My impression was that they weren't trying to stop skaters from destroying property. Unless you're talking about a historic neighborhood or fountain or something, most curbs and places skaters grind are not damaged in any way. I think the idea was to discourage skaters – "the bad kids" from "hanging out" at a particular spot. Which would make the lawsuits even wors

As a property owner: "Let them eat cake."

As a former boarder: "Facist pricks, lets shit on their door-step"

As a parent: "I'll give you the money to go to the skate park, just wear your helmet, ok?"

skate stoppers were in no way made to knock people off their boards. they were made to bump-ify the ledge so that you walk up, set your board down and go "oh man, i can't grind here." if skaters have the right to skate where they want, then people have the right to stop skaters from skating on their property. as for public sidewalks and the sort… not cool.

another thing. you can skate stop all you want, but there is a US law that states "handrails must be smooth and not have anything that is able to catch ones hand… etc." so… no handrails folks.
